The first blog post

Blog? About what? Where should I start?

I’ve always been an outside, hands on person. Yes I write the Craigslist ads for cows and classes, but the idea of reaching a reading audience instead of a buying audience intimidates me.

Buck up girl. You train unhandled cows for a living and cook for a household of 11.

Yes. I train cows. I rescue or buy or acquire dairy cows. It’s my passion, and I’m very good at it.

I’ve been fascinated by milk cows since I was a child of four. On Saturday mornings my father would take me to the dairy where he worked. We’d feed calves, or scrape allies, or help a cow calving, or eat ice cream, but I loved it. The smell of milk replacer in the calf barn haunts me. Several years ago we returned on a vacation and I saw the old (now unused) calf barn. I hadn’t seen it for 25 years but immediately I could hear the calves bawling and feel the slime from them sucking my fingers.

So we’d left the West Coast and moved to the Boston Mountains in Arkansas. My parents bought a 200 acre overgrown farm. My sister and I bought a cow. We counted all our saved dollars and quarters and paid $450 dollars cash for Bossy and her calf Sue.

Sue was the first unhandled calf I halterbroke and weaned—we didn’t have any decent pen to wean her in. She and I both lived through the process and maintained a relationship. I was 12, Sue was 9 months, Charolais x Hereford x Holstein.
