Food…again

I love making rich savory meals for our family and friends. ( I have to admit, I never imagined I’d spend so much of my life in the kitchen). I also never imagined how deeply fulfilling it is to cook amazing food.

I’m completely convinced that if more of our country ate really good food, our lives would be vastly improved. Good food improves even the worst moods in the most stressful times. It bolsters our bodies with nutrients so we can walk through life’s challenges. It soothes us when we’re sick, and helps us fight off infections. It satisfies and makes us happy.

Learn to enjoy cooking. Male or female, young and old, cooking has great rewards. Anyone can cook amazing dishes if using quality ingredients and techniques.
(And for the record, our first Christmas dinner went to the dog it was so terrible!). But I learned. I bought some old cookbooks—you don’t want ones that call for cans of condensed soup or white cake mix.
But there are cookbooks that read like poetry about their recipes, or add so much history to the recipe that you can feel the damp English air when you eat Lamb stew. Find these kinds of cookbooks.

And unless you think I’m only addressing the ladies…Alan is a superb cook. He tends to more of the meats, and definitely the grilling and smoking. But he can make a breakfast that’s perfectly balanced of mushrooms and eggs and cheese and bacon and spices. I think I fall in love all over again every time he grills a leg of lamb!

Use real ingredients. Get a nice apron and a pair of grilling gloves. Invest in your kitchen tools. Your pans, and knives, and spoons. Don’t be afraid to use your hands or try new vegetables. And buy more butter.

The more you can produce at home, the richer your table (and life) will become. God gave us taste buds for a reason!
Garden. Chickens. Pigs. Goats. Sheep. Cattle. Foraging. Fishing. Each one can bring so much joy to your life!
